Feb 16, 2012  Windows 7 Starter Update Issues - posted in Windows 7: Hey Guys, Appreciate any help since I think the service pack may be an important update.

Other than a Windows 7 OEM re-install, which I'd rather try and avoid.last resortI've got an old Samsung NC-110, Intel Atom 1.2GHz, 1GB RAM, 256GB SSD, working laptop, I'd rather re-use, as it has good battery life, for a few remote projects. It was working and updating before turning off approx in 2014. Last windows updates were installed on 17 Oct 2014.Currently it states Windows is up to date, which I doubt, and it will sit Checking for Updates, all week!it does have SP1 installed.I've1. Checked file system (sfc)2. Automatically reset Windows Update components.3.

Updated windows update client4. Run various Windows fix it tools, which claim they fixed it, but still.5. Reboot clean6. Removed virus checker.anyone got a magic dust to spare?any ideas?thanksAndy. For me, ever since Win10 was released, Windows Updates in Win7 only work when the 'Install updates automatically' option is selected. If any of the 'let me choose' options are selected, then I get the 'downloading forever' issue. So, in order to maintain control of my own computer, I hack the process by manually changing to auto-update, letting the updates run, and then changing it back to 'Never check for updates.' Note that Win10 is now a 'recommended' update for Win7 and Win8, so the above steps could 'upgrade' your Win7 to Win10.Tom. Thanks TomNote that Win10 is now a 'recommended' update for Win7 and Win8, so the above steps could 'upgrade' your Win7 to Win10.It's unlikely this PC will run Windows 10, and it's Starter Editon, so unlikely a Windows 10 update will be made available, and if Windows Updates is broken, i'll not get the update to know.I have left on, for weeks.

And I never get any new updates, they've just stopped, almost as if, no more updates are available for Windows 7 Starter, and this is the only laptop I have with Starter!I'll set it back and wait. I don't have a Windows 10 home x86 iso, and I'm not even going to try.Windoze 10!otherwise all the things will not work. Samsung specific drivers, software.Easy Resolution driver, hotkeys, battery managementand the NC110 have a weird, screen, that operates in 1024 x 600, and the last time we experimented with Windows 8.1, the drivers only went into 1024 x 768 mode, which compresses the screen, or something weird, and the text and screen is horrible! We generally never upgrade any laptops or workstations, than what they originally shipped with, unless their is FULL SUPPORT and DRIVERS from the Vendor.e.g. (and sometimes Sony, but don't got their, because that's a balls-up since VAIO got flogged off!). For the last few months, Windows update checks for '7 can take a VERY long time if it's been a while since they were checked. As in many hours (6-8 hours isn't uncommon).

Once you've done that round, subsequent update checks are MUCH quicker (but can still take 10-30 minutes). In several cases, they never finish (as you've noted). I've found that this can be resolved by changing the settings so that you are NOT using 'Microsoft Update' - i.e. Uncheck the box that says 'Give me updates for Microsoft products. ' This has resolved EVERY case I've seen where updates wouldn't download/install correctly. Once the system is up-to-date, you can re-check this box and it will then work fine again. By the way, I would NOT set the update settings to 'Automatic' = set them to 'Check for updates but let me choose.'

And when you get the list of updates, uncheck and HIDE KB3035583 and KB2952664 = this will eliminate the Windows 10 'nag'.Also note that there's a rumor that the actual Windows 10 install is going to be a recommended update as of this month's update Tuesday (i.e.
